We were recently called out to a property on the outskirts of Bristol where we had been given a report by the customer that wasps had been entering the shower and bathroom.
To begin with the wasps had been carefully removed with a glass and a small piece of cardboard, and nothing more was was considered until one appeared in the shower and the customer was stung.
On arrival we asked a number of questions to help us ascertain what the cause was and looking in the bathroom there were the first to culprits of wasps in bathrooms — integrated ceiling lights and an extractor fan, together with lots of gaps around boxed in pipework.
The wasps in this instance had managed to build a nest in a rather unfortunate place. we first thought that the wasps might be coming through small gaps around the ceiling lights, but what was actually happening was more unusual.
The wasps had built a nest inside the extractor hose for the shower! After twenty minutes of preparation we had treated the nest and the customer had a fully functioning extractor fan and a wasp free shower and bathroom.
Wasps also appear in bathrooms for the following reasons:
If a nest is in the loft they commonly come through light fittings and gaps where pipes etc come through the ceiling.
If the wasps are in a wall cavity, they commonly come through holes in the floor or from gaps around boxed in pipework, gaps where pipes go through floors and walls and also through gaps around window frames and bath panels.
Finally the next most common entry point is open windows. Wasps have linear flight paths in and out of a nest. Open windows often confuse and intercept wasps traveling to and from nearby nests.
Wasps are not the only insects that like extractor hoses. We more commonly find bumble bees nesting in them.

Max Headroom Broadcast Hijacking
Have you ever witnessed a television signal hijacking before? On November 22, 1987, residents of Chicago, Illinois saw two individuals take over their television screens. One of the hackers was wearing a Max Headroom mask and jabbered some nonsense. The hacker also mooned the camera and was spanked with a flyswatter by the accomplice. The hackers remain unidentified.
Dyatlov Pass Incident
Nine ski hikers mysteriously died in the Ural Mountains of Russia. In the middle of the night, something forced them to cut their way out of their tent and into the freezing cold. Six of them died from hypothermia and the others from physical trauma including a fractured skull and serious chest fractures. One of the hikers' eyes and tongue was missing. Experts don't know what caused their deaths.
The Mysterious "Babushka Lady"
An unknown woman, now called the Babushka Lady, may have taken photographs of JFK the exact moment he was shot because on films from other witnesses she can be seen holding a camera over her face as JFK rode near her. People in the film have been identified except for the Babushka Lady and a couple others (such as the Umbrella Man or Badge Man). The footage she took of the assassination was never found. Many conspiracy theories surround the unknown woman.
The Bizarre Death of Elisa Lam
On February 19, 2013, Lam's body was found in a water tank on top of Downtown LA's infamous Cecil Hotel when guests were complaining about the color and taste of the water. Earlier that month, she was reported missing and the hotel's elevator camera captured Lam behaving strangely. People suspect the video was tampered with. The cause of her death remains unsolved. The Cecil Hotel is home to 16 strange deaths.
Bloop
In 1997, the U.S. National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) detected an ultra-low-frequency, high amplitude underwater sound. Experts believe the sound is of animal origin, but the strange part is, no animal on Earth is able to make such a powerful call, so they just named the sound Bloop.
The Hessdalen Lights
Unexplained lights travel in Hessdalen Valley of Norway during both the day and night. The lights can be bright white, yellow, or red. Sometimes the lights move at different speeds.
Antikythera Mechanism
This artifact doesn't look like much, but scientists believe it was an important tool that calculated astronomical events in ancient Greece. More of its mysteries are still being solved today.
Trepanning
Around the world during ancient times, humans drilled holes into each others' skulls in a process called trepanning. Scientists can't agree on the reason. Experts suggest it was a form of brain surgery or a ritual to let out evil spirits.
The Battle of Los Angeles
The Great Los Angeles Air Raid, also called the Battle of Los Angeles, was when defense plants sounded air raid sirens and fired 1,400 times into the air at a reported aircraft using machine guns and anti-aircraft shells. The Air Force claims the event on February 24, 1942, was a mistake. The reported aircraft was a meteorological balloon. Newspapers suspected the military actually covered up the real story.
Tiananmen Square Tank Man
The Tank Man became internationally known by an iconic photo. He was snapped obstructing the path of Chinese military tanks on June 5, 1989, after the Tiananmen Square protests were suppressed. His identity and the story of what happened to him remain unknown.
Massive Whale Strandings in New Zealand
In New Zealand, over 656 whales were stranded in February 2017. The event is the second-largest stranding in New Zealand. The biggest stranding occurred in the 1800's. Scientists can't confirm why the strandings are so massive, but predators, illness, navigational errors, and tides falling could be reasons. Recently, 145 whales were stranded and died on November 26, 2018.
Black Knight Satellite
Some people believe the object in the NASA's captured photo is of extraterrestrial origin and has been orbiting the earth for 13,000 years. NASA claims the object is merely space debris like a lost thermal blanket from one of their missions.
Fairy Circles in Africa
Fairy circles look like polka dots have invaded the ground. Ecologists were only aware of the phenomenon in Southern Africa, mainly Namibia, but found similar ring patches in Western Australia in 2014. Experts have no idea what causes these rings.
The Falcon Lake Incident
Stefan Michalak claims he encountered a UFO and learned his lesson when the flying disk burned him at Falcon Lake in Canada on May 20, 1967. A pattern of marks was on his chest. His burned belongings were investigated, but no one could figure out what burned him because his story checked out.

Sodder Children Disappearance
On December 24, 1945, the Sodder home was destroyed by a fire. The parents believe it was arson due to a mysterious phone call right before the fire, their phone line being cut, and someone moving a ladder on their house, while the fire department claims it was caused by an electrical issue. Four of their children escaped, while the bodies of their other five children were nowhere to be found. The parents suspect they were kidnapped because the father had problems with the Sicilian Mafia.
South Carolina's Lizard Man
Residents of Bishopville are serious about a red-eyed, 7-foot creature, also known as Lizard Man, inhabiting their swamp. In the 1980s, a teenager reported that the entity wrecked his car and ever since then the story of the Lizard Man has been kept alive.
Phoenix Lights
Thousands of people saw bizarre unidentified flying objects that lit up the sky in Arizona and Nevada on March 13, 1997.
Hampton Court Ghost
Security cameras caught a ghostly figure opening the fire doors at the Hampton Court in October 2003. Staff are puzzled on who or what the figure could be and we're puzzled about why people still work there after seeing the video.

Two Dutch hikers died during a trip to Panama. Parts of their bodies were discovered, but the cause of death was never solved. Their camera was found with normal photos of the two along with strange flash photos in the darkness.

In 1951, a few of Reeser's body parts were found among piles of ash possibly due to spontaneous human combustion. Her skull was shrunken to the size of a teacup. The area of the house where her body was found barely had any damage. This baffled investigators because it would take extremely high temperatures for the body to turn to ashes, but the house wasn't affected.
The Original "Milk Carton Boy"
There were no clues on 12-year-old Johnny Gosch's sudden disappearance in 1982. He was the first child to have his picture on milk cartons to help find missing children. His mother claims he came to visit her in 1997 with an unidentified man, informing her that he was a victim of a pedophile ring and was too old to stay in it. Her son didn't want to risk his family's safety so he changed his identity and couldn't come home. No one else can confirm this meeting and Johnny was never seen again.
The First South Pole Murder
In Antartica, Rodney David Marks mysteriously died from methanol poisoning at work. No one knows how he could have ingested the poison, but people suspect he was murdered.
Baby Window Cages
Doctors convinced people it was a good idea to attach strange wire cages to windows of high buildings in order for their babies to get air from the 1920s to 1930s.
The Hinterkaifeck Murders
In 1922, six people were brutally murdered with a mattock (similar to a pickaxe) on a small farm in modern-day Germany. Before the attack, weird occurrences happened on the farm. Six months before the event, the maid quit because she believed the farm was haunted. A few days before the murders, one of the house keys went missing, footprints were found leading to the house, but not away from the house, and the family heard footsteps in the attic. The murders remain unsolved.
Colony Collapse Disorder
Since 1869, there's been a phenomenon called colony collapse disorder. It's when worker bees leave their colony and queen. As of 2006, the number of disappearances has dramatically risen around the world. The cause of colony collapse disorder is unknown.
The Back Seat Ghost
Don't you hate it when ghosts show up in the back seat when you're driving? Mrs. Mabel Chinnery was visiting her mother's grave and taking pictures of her husband waiting in the car. Chinnery immediately noticed a figure resembling her mother in the backseat. Photo experts have investigated the photo and have not found any tampering.

A 350-year-old rock formation located in Siberia has scientists scratching their heads. Scientists aren't sure of the crater's origin, hypotheses include meteor, volcano and gas sources.

25 people mysteriously disappeared from the merchant vessel, MV Joyita in 1955. When the boat was found, it was in bad condition and tilting to one side, but it's buoyancy made it unsinkable. The passengers and crew could have stayed and waited for help.
Tamam Shud Case
An unidentified dead man was found on a beach in South Australia in 1948. The Persian phrase tamám shud, meaning ended or finished, was found on a piece of paper in his pants. A book was also found with an undeciphered handwritten message. Investigators don't know the identity of the man or how he died.
Gas-resistant Pram
In 1938, Britain demonstrated gas-resistant masks and prams as a safety precaution for the war. The pram protected babies and gave them fresh air from a gas filter.
The Silent Twins
June and Jennifer Gibbons were known as "The Silent Twins" because they refused to speak to anyone except for themselves. They also committed crimes together. The twins believed the only way they could live a normal life was if one of them died or was "sacrificed." One twin mysteriously died in 1980.

Bathroom lighting can be used for general lighting, task lighting, or accent lighting. Proper lighting and can make a big difference in the functionality and ambiance of your bathroom.
Light fixtures for bathrooms are available in a wide range of options, including:
Wall Mounted Single Bulb Light Fixtures: Usually placed on either side of the mirror over the vanity to provide even lighting.
Wall Mounted Multi-Bulb Light Fixtures: Usually mounted above the vanity mirror, can range from two to eight bulbs.
Ceiling Mounted Protruding Light Fixtures: Can be traditional ceiling fixtures or lights incorporated into bathroom vent fans.
Recessed Light Fixtures: Recessed lighting can be used for general, task, or accent lighting in a bathroom. To prevent problems with condensation, use enclosed shower trims on recessed bathroom light fixtures.
Ceiling Mounted Hanging Light Fixtures: Can range from hanging pendant lights to small chandeliers. Hanging light fixtures can't be installed within 3' of a bathtub unless there is at least 8' of clearance between the top of the tub and bottom of the light fixture.

VIDEO TRANSCRIPT Danny Lipford: Many older bathrooms will only have just one light fixture right in the center of the ceiling. And that can be very frustrating. If you're standing in front of the vanity, you'll have a bit of a shadow there that can just really not provide you adequate light. So, that's why having some task lighting really makes a lot of sense, and a wall mounted fixture like this can allow you to put one of these on each side of the mirror to balance that lighting out.
Now, if you have a situation where you just don't have room for a fixture on either side of that mirror, you can go with some of the multi-bulb fixtures that are available. And it's just about endless the different styles and finishes they're available in.
But it's also still a good idea to have that ambient light in the center of the room, and you don't have to compromise there. You can have some really good looking fixtures, more contemporary looking, a little more traditional, very easy to upgrade that fixture. But also, have some fun with it, and you can put some decorative fixtures in, like a pendant light.
Now if you have a large enough room, you might even consider a small chandelier. Especially if you have a nice little tub area you want to accent, maybe even putting a dimmer on it. That can really be a very nice look in your bathroom.

What are shower doors made of?
Most shower doors are made of tempered glass, a special type of glass that is safer if broken than regular glass. In this post, I have only tested this solution on glass shower doors. I am not recommending it for any other shower door or for any tile, stone or marble.
What causes white stains on shower doors?
Most white stains on shower doors are hard water stains, sometimes called soap scum. It is what remains on shower doors when hard water mixes with dirt, soap residue, and body oils. If allowed to build up over time, the deposits harden and can be very difficult to clean. The most commonplace for soap scum to cling is to the shower doors that are used regularly. The steam, water, soaps, shampoos, and other bathing products eventually end up causing a cloudy film on the shower doors that is very unattractive.
What dish soap works best to clean shower doors?
Dawn is the only dish soap that I ever use~for dishes and for cleaning shower doors. Why? In a word~grease. Dawn is the only dish soap (to my knowledge) containing a special grease fighting agent that almost melts grease into oblivion.
What is the best vinegar to clean shower doors?
The vinegar that works in this dynamic Dawn & vinegar duo is plain white distilled vinegar. It is the least expensive vinegar you can buy, and it is also the best one to tackle this and other household cleaning tasks. Distilled white vinegar is the "workhorse" or all vinegar!
What tools do I need to clean my shower doors?
The tools that I use to clean my shower doors with the Dawn & vinegar solution area microfiber cloth or clean washcloth to wipe down the shower doors after they have been sprayed with the solution, a good spray shower to rinse the solution, and a squeegee (if I can find it) to wipe the shower doors dry.
Dawn & vinegar works better than store bought cleaners.
I've tried myriad cleaners specifically for bathrooms~from Rain-X to scrubbing bubbles and beyond. I've never had any store bought cleaner work better than this easy, inexpensive, DIY Dawn vinegar solution.
What is so special about Dawn and vinegar?
Dawn breaks down grease and grime. Of all the dishwashing soaps you can buy, Dawn is the best at removing oils. In oil spills, it is the best solution for cleaning the birds' feathers without harming their skin. The reason? Dawn contains petroleum. It sounds counterintuitive, but it works.
Vinegar removes residue and imparts shine. It is a nature's wonder that can be used for so many purposes. My dermatologist Dr. Jo Herzog shares what it does in this post on Listerine vinegar foot soak.
Which Dawn should I use for shower door cleaner?
If you want the breakdown of the different Dawn dish detergent options, I list them below. In my opinion, any Dawn will do a beautiful job, along with vinegar, of cleaning shower doors.
The New and Improved Dawn Ultra Blue contains "3X More Grease Cleaning Power." It is 3 times stronger than non-ultra Dawn (regular Dawn).
3X Dawn is 50% stronger than the 2X varieties.
Note that some other varieties of DawnUltra still say "2X Grease Cleaning Power."
The recipe for Dawn & vinegar shower door cleaner.
Use equal parts Dawn + vinegar. You can also cut the Dawn if your mixture is too thick.
Heat the solution in the microwave for 2 minutes (do not boil). Stir well, and pour into the bottle when not too hot. This is key for the effective mixing/blending of the mixture.
Put the solution into a good spray bottle. These clear spray bottles come in a set of 3 and are less than $20.
Use a funnel for mess-free pouring. Collapsable funnels like these are ideal as they don't take up drawer space.
How to clean shower doors with Dawn + Vinegar.
Spray the Dawn + Vinegar solution liberally on dry shower doors. Wet shower doors dilute the mixture. Also, the solution clings to dry shower doors better than wet ones.
Leave on for at least 2-3 minutes. I shower while the solution is on my shower doors which takes about 5 minutes.
Wipe shower doors with a wet washcloth. I toss an extra washcloth into the shower with me when I plan to wash the shower doors. I let it get wet while I am showering, and it is ready to use when it is time to wipe the Dawn + Vinegar solution off the shower doors.
Rinse shower doors with warm water. My shower head is handheld, so I start from the top and rinse all the doors until they are crystal clear.
Wipe the doors down with a squeegee. This white Oxo squeegee is something I love and keep it in the shower just for this purpose. If you don't wipe the doors with a squeegee, the doors will still be clean, but they won't dry as crystal clear.
Baking soda also works to clean shower doors.
Baking soda acts as an abrasive, and combined with vinegar, can be very effective at dissolving many hard water spots and soap scum. If you want to try this method, simply saturate a sponge or cloth with vinegar, then coat it with baking soda. Use a little elbow grease to scrub until the soap scum disappears. Rinse with warm water to remove any remaining residue.

In the short video below, I mix up a solution of Dawn & vinegar and show how quick and easy it is to clean shower doors. It really takes no scrubbing~just a tiny bit of elbow grease and a good shower head sprayer.
Note: If you do the process while showering, be prepared for a strong vinegar smell. This doesn't really bother me at all since vinegar is natural and non-toxic.
Dawn Vinegar for Oven Door Gunk

I recently discovered that Dawn & vinegar shower door solution is hugely effective at cleaning oven doors. If you have an oven, you know how the doors get covered in "gunk" made of grease. See below how effective this solution is at removing oven door gunk.
Materials
Original (blue) Dawn
white vinegar
spray bottle
Tools
funnel
8 cup glass measuring bowl
Instructions
Pour 2 cups Dawn and 2 cups vinegar into a glass bowl.
Stir; heat 4 minutes in the microwave; remove and stir again.
Using a funnel, carefully pour the solution into the spray bottle. *
Shake well to mix the solution. Use as needed on shower doors.
Notes
* Be careful not to burn yourself if the solution is hot.
** If Dawn is a thicker, commercial type version, use 2 parts vinegar to one part Dawn so that it won't be too thick.
What to do if your Dawn-Vinegar gets thick.
If your your Dawn vinegar solution gets thick or is difficult to spray from the bottle, there is an easy solution. First, empty your bottle that is too thick, and rinse the sprayer well with water to flush out the sprayer. Second, mix a new solution following different proportions that I share in the short video below.
